In the 1930’s we watched the government of the day burn the last of our 24 bighouses to the ground – along with our way of life.

The summer village at Aktis Island was the heart of the Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k’tles7et’h’ territories. Rows of buildings, including 24 bighouses, created a vibrant community that flourished over millennia. In the 1930’s the Canadian government forcibly removed the people from their homes and burned their houses to the ground, along with their cultural possessions and way of life.
